Synopsis: "Queen of citadels" of Vauban is the model of the military constructions which are marking out France. The citadel of Lille is built between 1668 and 1671 at the request of Louis XIV, on plans of the engineer and military architect Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban. He conceives its stronghold as an answer to the evolution of the art of war. If it lost its first function, its rigour and its formal simplicity have made it a source of inspiration for the big contemporary architects.
