In 12th-century France, the brilliant young philosophy teacher Abelard seduced his student Heloise. The pair eloped and had a passionate love affair, as physical as it was spiritual. Heloise's family, considering themselves dishonored, had Abelard castrated while he slept. The passionate and often erotic letters written by the lovers (from the separate monasteries to which they retreated) tell the story of their love, of the desire that still burned within Heloise, and of Abelard's more spiritual passion.
