In 1828–1829, Champollion, the decoder of hieroglyphs, led an expedition of scholars and artists up the Nile to the reaches of the Nubian desert. During this journey through time and space, they carried out surveys, excavations, and purchases for the Musée du Louvre. These letter and diary extracts abound in reflections on the art and architecture of the places they visited... and also concern stray dogs, bards, scholars, donkeys, town and country scenes, riverbank life, and desert dreams. A public reading, recorded at the Louvre Auditorium on January 9, 1998.
