This film was made for the 400th anniversary of the death of Germain Pilon (1528–1590), who carved the recumbent figures of Henri II and Catherine de Medici for the Basilica of St. Denis, burial place of the kings of France. As some of the sculptor's works cannot be transported, the film constitutes an unconventional form of exhibition, presenting a detailed visual exploration of selected statues. Contrasts, smooth solid areas, shadowed hollows… Pilon gave an appearance of grace to his representations of pain and death.
