Jacques-Louis David's painting The Oath of the Horatii, presented in Rome in 1785, would come to be seen as the manifesto of neoclassicism. The film investigates this aesthetic turning point, which signaled a change in attitudes: the ultimate human goal was no longer happiness, but virtue and devotion to duty.
