In 1513, Michelangelo began to sculpt two almost nude male figures—bound slaves, intended to adorn the vast mausoleum of Pope Julius II in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. However, scheming, conflicts with the Pope's heirs, and problems of a technical nature meant that they were never added to the papal tomb.
