Michelangelo's Slaves: The Soul in Chains

Sculptures series

The "Sculptures" series is designed to inform our perception of seminal works of art from different periods. In each episode, a sculpture from the museum is situated in its historical context and observed from all sides in its three-dimensionality.

Director(s): Martin Fraudreau

In 1513, Michelangelo began to sculpt two almost nude male figures—bound slaves, intended to adorn the vast mausoleum of Pope Julius II in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. However, scheming, conflicts with the Pope's heirs, and problems of a technical nature meant that they were never added to the papal tomb.
