The construction of a dam on the Euphrates in Turkey threatened to destroy one of the most important cities in the Roman empire. In July 2000, the ancient city of Zeugma was on the point of disappearing under 40 meters of water. A team of archaeologists, epigraphists, and ceramics experts used some spectacular technical equipment in a race against the clock to save the vestiges of several centuries of history.
